An EIN, or Employer Identification Number, is a unique nine-digit number assigned by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to identify your business for tax purposes. It is also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number. EINs are used to identify a business entity, similar to how a Social Security Number is used to identify an individual.
EINs are required for a variety of reasons, including when a business hires employees, opens a bank account, applies for business licenses and permits, and files tax returns. EINs are also necessary for partnerships, corporations, and LLCs.
You can apply for an EIN online through the IRS website, by mail, fax, or phone. The application process is FREE, and once approved, the business will receive it’s unique EIN immediately.
